If you run a maintenance department where there is a lot of foot traffic and guests, chances are you have the potential to have a pest problem. From parking lots to lodging, whether it's mice, rats, roaches, or flies – pests not only carry disease but they cause problems with how customers see your place of business.
There are a few ways you can help prevent an influx of pests and a lot of it comes down to preventative maintenance.
Cleanliness
Pests obviously love areas that aren't clean, especially where they can find food. Make sure that trash cans are rinsed out on a regular basis so that dirt and food does not accumulate, which attracts all kinds of bugs and rodents. Make sure to rinse off these areas where this kind of debris can be found such as picnic areas, trash areas, and even sidewalks after a busy day.
Water Sources
Water sources are a major attraction for pests – especially cockroaches. Make sure that fountains or even plants that are watered, are kept clean and pest control chemicals are used when necessary. Standing water is a no-no in all cases and can even attract mosquitos. Make sure any buckets or areas where water collects but doesn't flow, is emptied and kept clean.
Debris Sources
For mice, squirrels, and other rodents, make sure that your gutters, pipes, drains, hedges, and trees are all clean and clutter free. If you have trees and hedges that need trimming, make sure that is done on a regular basis so it does not encourage these pests who love hiding places.
Pest Control
Even with the most clean facility, others can bring in pests so make sure you have a safe, healthy pest control system in place. Whether you do it yourself or have a company come in, you'll want to have it done on a regular basis to ensure that unwanted guests don't hitch a ride to your facility.
