Windows (and not the computer kind) are a huge investment which is why it is so important to maintain them properly to ensure their longevity. Too often windows are installed in a building and then left to take care of themselves which can lead to issues that happen after the warranty runs out.

Keep Them Clean

One of the easiest things to maintain with your windows is to keep them clean. By keeping a clean window, you can tell sooner if there are issues with seals or weather stripping. Not to mention that it makes the area look cleaner and nicer for everyone who sees them. Don't forget to clean the casings area as well. A buildup of debris and dirt can cause windows to not work properly or jam.

Inspect Your Windows

Another thing to do on a periodic basis is to inspect your windows. Check things like the weather stripping for rot, the window frame, the seals, the sash, and the casing. If these are double pane windows, you will want to check for moisture which can cause the seal to have to be replaced and should be covered under your warranty if you catch it in time. Damaged rubber seals can mean that you are losing energy and need to be fixed as well. Wood damage is another consideration – check the wood for rot and repair with epoxy if needed.

Painting Maintenance

The frames of your windows should be repainted every three or four years to ensure that they continue looking good. Make sure that whoever paints the frames cleans the windows well and does not paint over any moving parts which can cause the window to jam.
