A lot goes into planning a painting project and there are quite a few things you need to know just to get started, and this can be as simple as who, what, and where.

Who is doing the work?

It is important to know whether you need to use outside contractors or if you can use your in-house staff and this depends on a variety of factors. If you need the job done fast, even if it is an easy job you may want to have extra helpers so that it doesn't inconvenience the day to day operations of your company or the operations at the business you run.

What is being painted?

As you know, different surface areas require different preparation techniques and even different paint and supplies. For example, walls that need to be cleaned on a regular basis should have a high gloss sheen because it is easier to clean. In fact, the rule of thumb that states, “The higher the sheen, the higher the shine – and the higher the shine, the more durable it will be. When you get into masonry, brick, metal, and other types of surfaces, you have to research each one to know which paint works best on each material.

Where is it being painted?

What area is being painting will make a difference in how you proceed with the work. For instance, a high traffic area will most likely need to be done in a more timely manner so it does not affect your customers or staff. Areas that are more inaccessible or not in main areas of the company may be able to be done at a slower pace but even then, you will want to be sure that your employees have enough time to devote to other work as well.

With a CMMS program, you can check the schedules of your employees and know the who, what, and where of your painting project so you can schedule accordingly. It makes it easier to delegate tasks and those tasks that are scheduled are sent out immediately if you choose and can be scheduled in advance so that you don't forget. This makes any project, painting or otherwise, much less of a headache.
