Back in 2006, Dan Roberge and two other partners formed the corporation, Gnxcor which lead to the creation of Maintenance Care. Dan’s wife Laurie is his partner and together they work to make Maintenance Care the success that it is today – being one of the easiest, most accessible maintenance software tools in the marketplace.
Recently, an interview with Dan Roberge was done by Idea Mensch and here are a few of the highlights. Please follow this link for the full interview.
Where did the idea for Maintenance Care come from?
The idea came about 15 years ago when a friend of Dan’s had stopped up a toilet in the bathroom where he worked. Being too embarrassed to tell anyone, he instead left an anonymous note. It was from that episode that they discussed the need for an online maintenance request process.
What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?
Since they are a small head office, Dan still does a variety of tasks there, which includes a little of everything. With every day being different, some days might be spent on marketing while others include working on the Maintenance Care website or design marketing. There is also training, staff support, talking to potential customers, and developing more comprehensive reports for the work order software.
What’s one trend that really excites you?
Most people are familiar with voice recognition technology. With Alexa, Siri, Google voice, and similar - this is something that the company feels would be excellent for our products since it would free up even more time and allow staff to be less tethered to their desks – more so than they already are with the mobile app.
What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?
Some people are procrastinators, but Dan is a doer to a fault. Dan feels that in order to move your business ahead you have to keep on doing things as soon as possible and while some might tell him he needs a break here and there, that is just something that he finds hard to do. Instead, he likes to get things done sooner, rather than later.
What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?
In the words from Dan himself, “I think tackling certain potential customers only when I was ready for them. I didn’t start off by going after the bigger players. I started with the smaller customers. Those that I could develop my skill set on and work out all of the issues. I grew to bigger customers when I felt I was ready and that is still true today with the sales people we hire. I always start them off on the smaller leads and only once they have hit certain milestones do they graduate to bigger opportunities.”
What is your favorite quote?
"You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take." -Wayne Gretzky
