CMMS: How Do Smoking Laws Affect Your Maintenance Department?

Years ago, it was a common sight to see smokers in the work place. In fact, as late as the early 90s, it was not unusual to see workers smoking at their desk – but times have changed. Now, there are so many areas of North America that do not allow smoking anywhere near a building, let along inside of one.

How does this affect your facility – well, it depends on what kind of facility you run.  For instance, if you run a packaging plant, then your company probably already has specific rules in place on if smoking is allowed on the property at all. However, if you are in the hospitality industry and run a facility then this also affects the guests where you work and this can be a benefit.

Smoking Decline

Smoking is less socially acceptable than it was in the past. In fact, from 1965 to 2011 the statistical data for smoking and tobacco use has show a steady decline. It is easy to designate your workplace as a smoke-free zone and according to the ANR (Americans for Nonsmoker Rights), you can simply remove the ashtrays and post a sign – that's it.

Designated Areas

If you run a facility and plan to go smoke-free then it may be easy to do among the employees but in an industry that caters to guests or non-employees, especially a hotel, motel, resort, or health business, there must be certain measures in place as well as the signs – such as having a placard in the rooms designating them as smoke-free.

Make Change Easy

Making these changes mean more work and it is easy if you have a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Software) system in place because you can simply add this work in as a task that is designated to the employee. Instead of having to delegate when and who needs to do the work, you can enter it in to the web based browser at your convenience and when it is time to get done, the work is automatically sent to the employee(s).
