We all know that when it comes to performing a maintenance task, there is a right way and a wrong way of doing things. However, in many facilities, there is a lack of standardization.
Not having set standards is where issues can quickly escalate and spiral out of control. There is a better way of ensuring a smoother way of implementing maintenance work and preventative maintenance and that is with a CMMS program.
Here are a few ways to make sure that things are done at a similar level in your facility:
Start Small
Trying to tackle all of the work in one sitting is not the best idea in making sure everything is standardized. Instead, start with a smaller job and once it is done then you can move on to the next one. Set some goals on when you would like to be complete with everything and stick to it. It is better to be steady than try to move through everything fast, only to get frustrated or make it harder on yourself.
Be a Facilitator
It is not your job to be the go-to expert on all aspects of maintenance. Instead, be the expert facilitator. Spend time with your staff and discuss how things are done and what issues they may have with anything. It will empower your employees to work better and take more pride in the work that they do, especially if they are part of a change that helps everything run better or more efficiently.

Keep At It
Making sure that things are done in a standardized way is a job that never ends. You cannot just implement a change and stop there. Use the small goals that were mentioned above and keep at it until most changes are made and even when you think you are done, there is most likely another area that needs work.
Sometimes we forget that we can make a difference, and that difference comes when we drive standardization of work in the right way.
