If you're a homeowner then you know that without proper maintenance, your home can fall into disarray, causing huge expenses that maybe could have been prevented. The same thing applies to your work environment if you run a maintenance department.

Here are a few things that you may already do at home that also need attention at work.

Air Conditioning Filters

Keeping air conditioning filters changed on a regular basis is integral to having an HVAC system that is more efficient. A clogged filter is not only unhealthy but it makes your air conditioning system have to work harder, putting more strain on the unit. This also consumes more energy and wastes money. One to three months is average on when to change the filter depending on your individual needs at the facility you manage.

Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors keep us more safe from fires and of course the batteries have to be changed in order to know that they are working properly. Just like you probably have more than one in your home, there should be an ample amount in your business and specific guidelines state how many are needed in your particular state. While you may assume that the guidelines are the same for every area, they are not. Once you have the appropriate amount, make sure the batteries are fresh by changing them at least once a year, if not sooner.

Dripping Faucets

Dripping faucets are not only annoying but they cost money. Did you know that one leaky faucet can waste more than 1000 gallons of water in a year's time? Now imagine at your facility that there are three or four leaky faucets in different areas of the building – this adds up to major amounts of wasted money. By repairing one as soon as it needs it, you save money and don't have to do a bunch at once.
