For just a moment, think about how it feels when your maintenance crew does a great deal of work...at the wrong place. Not only do you sacrifice all of those work hours, but you're probably losing a great deal of money spent on materials as well. Once your maintenance crew figures out they've been doing the wrong work at the wrong location, they probably feel like they're in a heap of trouble.

Landing at the Wrong Airport

We would imagine that's exactly how the pilot of a Boeing 747 Dreamlifter cargo plane felt when he landed the massive aircraft in the wrong location late one night this week, as well.

According to an article on the USA Today website, the pilots of the 747 Dreamlifter had clearance to land at the McConnell Air Force Base, and all preparations had been made for a safe landing. However, the flight crew claimed that they became disoriented during the flight, and instead, they touched down at Jabara Airport near Wichita.

The first issue that had to be discussed was whether or not the Dreamlifter would be able to take off from the Wichita airport. Because of its size, and because it requires so much room for a safe landing, authorities weren't sure that the 6,100 foot runway that Jabara Airport offered would be long enough to accommodate the huge airplane.

Fortunately, it was determined that the plane would not be stuck there forever, and it was scheduled to depart the following day.

Provide the Right Tools

Arriving in the wrong airport was a big mistake. Although doing maintenance in the wrong location pales in comparison to the landing of this giant airplane, you can understand how important it is to make sure your crew is working in the correct location at all times. You need to ask yourself if you have given your team proper tools to get the job done correctly, and in the right location.  What is the process for communicating issues and does that information get recorded anywhere?

It doesn't matter if the tasks are delegated by a manager or directly issued from residents or tenants, the process for task management needs to be clear and effective.

Work order management software is one way you can ensure your employees are working in the right place at the right time.
