Your facility has so many assets that require monitoring, but If you have elevators, then you know how important it is to keep them working properly. You also know how expensive it can be to replace them.

Costs involving elevator replacement can run into the thousands with an average residential elevator costing around $15K to change out – and that is just for one.

Cost of Downtime

An administration building in HillBorough County (Tampa) Florida has found out just how much it can cost to have an elevator (or two) out of commission.

“About three years ago, say county officials, fire sprinklers accidentally filled the elevator shaft knocking both lifts off-line. The following year, they say, moisture got into the fire sensors, grounding the elevators again. At some point, there were so many issues, it finally made more financial sense for the county to switch to a flat $300 a month service plan rather than paying for individual service calls.”

Now $300 a month is definitely easier to come up with than a lump some of $15K, but you also have to take into consideration that after four years of that monthly payment, one new elevator would be paid for.  As you can see, many factors need to be considered. In this particular case, the $300 a month is not all that it is costing the county.

“Four times in the last 90 days one or both elevators has broken again. That forced his office to reassign two county workers from the jobs taxpayers would normally pay them to do – to playing chauffeur. Driving a pair of shuttles in a constant loop to get people back to their parking spaces of the nine-story garage.”

Replacement Planning

This chauffeuring has become another issue where the maintenance workers for the county are having to drive people around rather than doing important work that is needed elsewhere.  Certainly you have to weigh out the costs involved and in some cases it is not feasible. However, in this case where both elevators are constantly breaking, it may be in the best interest of the county to at least get one elevator replaced.
