CMMS Is The Future And The Future is Now, Its Time To Go Mobile

Let's be honest – if you have always done things a certain way then it is difficult to make changes, even those changes that are helpful in the long run. One way that many maintenance facilities have always done things is by scheduling maintenance work by hand.

For instance, a phone call comes in to the maintenance department at a healthcare facility. There is an issue with a sewage leak, which actually happened in a Florida facility.

“Issues with hospitals' facilities can sometimes put patient safety at risk. Several times in 2015, the safety of hospital patients was compromised or nearly compromised because of building or maintenance problems. For instance, a Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration report released in April cited one Florida hospital's handling of a sewage leak as a patient safety issue, including its failure to ensure the sewage was cleaned up properly and failure to conduct an infection control risk assessment. The investigators also reported finding live rats above the affected ceiling tiles and air conditioning supply vents leaking condensation over food prep tables.”

As you can see, these are serious problems. Now in the old days, that call would come in, the person who took the call would write it down and then schedule a maintenance person to check it out. Whether it is something that can be fixed by maintenance or requires an outside party, the issue still has to be looked at first.

The Inefficient Way

Now, once it is written down the supervisor will have someone look at it by either calling them, having them stop by the maintenance shop, or posting it somewhere. The problem with this way of doing things is, it takes more time. The other issue is communication where phone calls can be distorted, handwriting can be illegible, or notes can get lost.

The Efficient Way

The other great thing? All of your notes and records are kept so that even if the work gets done, you don't have to worry about having to prove it to someone. CMMS gives you more freedom since you do not have to be at the shop to send out an order so it's easier and gives you more time to focus on other tasks, knowing that everything is taken care of.
