At a school complex in Newton, there has been an issue on whether to rebuild or repair the Berg Complex due to a growing problem with remodeling. According to an article published about the issue:

“Environmental, maintenance and overloaded utilities have left the district with two choices in order to both lower costs and resolve ongoing issues: move students into temporary classrooms and completely gut the facility, or simply replace it. Over the past 20 years, since the last major remodeling was completed, spiraling maintenance costs in parts and labor have caused the district to seriously consider either a major remodel or rebuilding it.”

The problem in this case, as with many buildings, is that there has to be a balance between investing more money to make repairs and knowing when it's time to tear down and rebuild.

Structural Capabilities

One of the major issues with making repairs to this building, is that it is simply not capable of housing certain remodels, such as new, efficiency-improving systems like air conditioning units. So while there needs to be major improvements to the building, which happens to house the most students, the building cannot sit unused, yet it also cannot continue to become a problem where repairs keep being made to no avail.

Keep Up With Maintenance

Preventative maintenance is crucial to keeping buildings from becoming derelict or to the point where money is simply going out the window, so to speak. Now in this case, there was damage due to a tornado and other causes that were no fault of a maintenance crew. However in general, it is preventative maintenance that keeps buildings lasting longer and staying up to code.

Make sure that you always have your preventative maintenance done on a regular basis and that is more easily done with a CMMS program, which stands for Computerized Maintenance Management Software. It allows you to set up scheduled preventative maintenance tasks and this can be done daily, weekly, monthly, etc. You have it done when you need it done and once it's set up, you can sit back and relax.
