If you run a Maintenance department, then you know how important it is to have everything working, when you need it. Whether it's backup for your computer system, an UPS system, or generators, it is important to know that your backup power is in good working condition and if you don't already have backup power, it is a good idea to check out your options.

Generators

Most everyone knows what a generator is but there are many reasons why they are integral to a Maintenance Facility, especially those that are in the healthcare industry or even those who run a Data Center. Your generator(s) upkeep should be included as part of your preventative maintenance program so that you know they are in good working condition. When there is an emergency such as a major power outage or weather conditions that affect the electricity, you don't want to find out that the generator isn't working.

UPS Systems

These are batteries basically, but not just one. Instead, this is a series of batteries and it stands for Uninterruptable Power System. These are an integral need for those who have equipment that has to have uninterrupted power such as computer equipment. A more common term is simply a battery backup system. In fact, if you search for a battery backup system or a UPS backup system, you'll find the same thing. These are used for the home computer as well as company systems; the only difference is the size of the system or the number of things it does. For instance, some backup systems have a display of how many minutes you have left or will shut off the computer safely after a certain amount of time so that if you are not actually at the job site, you don't have to worry about a power outage.

When you have backup power and equipment, it needs preventative maintenance just like your other equipment. While it may be easier to make sure your UPS system is working, a generator may need more maintenance to be certain it will work. With equipment maintenance software, you can schedule your preventative maintenance and include your backup power so that it is always there when you need it to work.
