Rock n' Roll is not immune to technical difficulties.  We've all heard the stories behind those notoriously late artists who make their audience wait hours upon hours before coming on stage.  In a recent interview on VH1's That Metal Show, the king of tardiness, Axl Rose, tried to give his explanation as to why it seems to happen - “A lot of times, the day of show, for some reason, things start going wrong. People are making mistakes, you’re making mistakes, they’re making mistakes, and nobody even knows why. So you’re trying to sort through that, and get yourself in the right headspace and physical, whatever, that you’ve got to work through, I think we’re doing better as far as that goes.”

Most audience members understand the complexity of a travelling show. It basically comes down to so much to do with so little time.  The crew's to-do list would seem to be overflowing.   The stage manager is making multiple demands, such as more lighting here and more lighting there or this set needs to be placed here and that set needs to be rearranged.  The sound is off!  The list can go on and on.  Plus, the facility where the event is taking place has their set of priorities and they need to keep up with their regular maintenance tasks as well.  Perhaps everyone is overwhelmed as a result.  So how can work order management software help:

Efficiency.    Concert preparations are usually fast-paced.  As a result, efficiency is the key to success.  By using work order management software, the crews have the ability to keep track of task and manage related projects one after the other.  Instead of having to shift through a mountain of paperwork or try and be hands-on for every change, a stage manager can find all their information in one place!

Communication.  Everyone knows the value of communication.  Perhaps no one knows it better than the person in charge of maintenance work.  These people have tremendous pressure placed on them to fix any issues and fix them quickly.  In situations where problems occur by the minute, it's key to have a communication tool that allows for a maintenance person to receive notifications of tasks allowing them easily to determine where their time is best spent.

Here are some concert delays due to technical issues:

  • Notoriously late Guns n' Roses were vindicated of all blame at the Rock 'N Rev festival as the 30-man camera crew taping the Alice In Chains show experienced massive equipment failure before the Gunners were supposed to go on.  As a result, Guns n' Roses opted to use their own equipment to save the day and speed up the process of getting on stage.  Despite the band's best efforts, fans threw beer bottles and booed Axl and company for the delay...the band still gave a lengthy 22-song performance.
  • According to Perezhilton.com, in 2012, Madonna was performing a concert in Argentina when her private generator broke down in the middle of a song.  It was the last concert of the tour!  Preventive maintenance on the generator should have been kept up regularly to avoid the breakdown.
  • According to WENN.com, in July of 2013, Beyonce’ experienced technical difficulties involving malfunctioning video screens during the Essence Music Festival.

Though these delays were resolved quickly, delayed or cancelled concerts can be a costly endeavor and is disappointing to many fans.  Contact us about how work order management software can help you stay organized an efficient in the event of technical problems.
