How To Implement an Effective Preventative Maintenance Program

As a maintenance facility manager, you already know how important it is to have an effective preventative maintenance program. However, sometimes it can be difficult figuring out how to design one or where to start – especially if you have taken over for someone else or are new to the facility.

Here are a few steps that help create a PM program that is doable, effective, and successful.

Results

Start by analyzing the end results you seek. For instance, if you want to trim the budget then you have to see where the money is going and work your way backwards. Or, if you want to ensure that all preventative areas are taken care of, you have to first see which areas those are. By finding the results you seek, you can effectively start your preventative maintenance program.

Training

Effective training is key. Your employees have to know how to do the work they are expected to do in order to have it done properly. Make sure that all training is up to date and your workers know exactly what is expected of them before implementing a program. Otherwise, you will just confused workers and the work will be done improperly.

Get Help

One way to help you have a favorable outcome in your preventative maintenance program, is to have help with setting everything up. A CMMS (computerized maintenance management software) program allows you to set up preventative maintenance in advance, include notes, know who will do the work, when, and where, and run reports at any time, from any web browser. This is a program that helps you keep up with all of your preventative maintenance, set up work tasks and more.
