Preventative Maintenance vs Reactive Maintenance

Preventative

We all know that preventative maintenance is key to running a facility efficiently, but sometimes it can become a habit of doing more reactive maintenance than proactive maintenance.

Are_You_Prepared

Here are a few ways of knowing that your facility is reacting, not preparing:

  • You're constantly having to repair equipment that has broken down.

  • Repairs expenses are starting to pile up.

  • You've become quite acquainted with the machinery repairman or you see them more often than usual.

  • You hear the phrase, “Not again!” or “This is the third time this month.”

  • Your maintenance staff has become to get irritated over the same issues again and again.

  • Downtime has skyrocketed.

  • Paperwork is piling up due to expense reports, repair orders, and invoices.

  • Your boss or management has brought this to your attention as a problem.

These are just a few of the ways that tell you something you already know – reactive maintenance is not working.

The Switch

There are obviously a few ways of making the switch to preventative maintenance and since you most likely already perform preventative or proactive maintenance tasks at your facility, the switch is easier than you think.

Replacement vs Repairs

One way to start, so you have a good grasp of the problem, is to compare the costs of replacement vs repairs. If the repairs are starting to really add up, doing a comparison may show you that it is better to get new equipment rather than spend money on a sinking ship, so to speak.

Helpful Software

Another way is with CMMS from Maintenance Care. This software program allows you to track all of the components of preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance. You can also set up a schedule for your workers so that they have a planned guideline of when these proactive tasks need to be completed. Plus, you also see who did the job, when it was done, and what was done just in case there is a paperwork problem or any other issues.

Best of all, being proactive helps stop emergencies from popping up like an elevator being out of service or your main conveyor being down during the busiest time of the year. No matter what the issue is, taking care of potential problems immediately, is easier then scrambling to fix something at the last minute.
