If you take care of a large property, there is a chance that you have at least one building on the property that is empty – especially in older properties. Without proper attention to these buildings, there are times when they can become open to vermin and vandals, depending on where the empty building is located.

Here are a few preventative maintenance tasks that you can do to ensure that this does not happen – whether your building is in use or not.

Keep It Active

The most important thing is to keep the building looking like it is not vacant at all. Treat it like it is still fully operational and being used in order to keep out vandals and by keeping up with regular maintenance, you can keep out vermin like bugs and rats as well.

Don't Ignore The Vacant Building

When you do your pest control, do the vacant building as well. Also, make sure that the building is kept clean on the outside and the inside. Don't let things pile up inside, such as old materials or supplies and definitely make sure that the outside is kept clean as well. Clean up weeds around the building, keep the vacant building touched up with paint and keep the roof clean and in good shape.

Don't Be An Eye-Sore

Another reason to keep the property in good shape is for code-enforcement issues. If a property starts to look decayed then it can cause all kinds of issues with city, county, or municipalities and can lead to fines. It can also cause problems with the insurance on the property.

Preventative Maintenance

While most businesses do not have to worry about an empty building, this is a problem with some businesses and it is easy to take care of with just a little bit of preventative maintenance. And a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Software) program from Maintenance Care helps tremendously. It is easy to set these tasks up in advance and then they are automatically scheduled on the day that you have set them up for. It doesn't get behind and it doesn't interfere with the rest of the work.

Empty buildings can either be a blight on the property or they can be taken care of just like the rest of the property with proper preventative maintenance.
