Energy efficiency is one factor in saving costs that is often overlooked. It is not that the facility manager doesn't want to be more energy efficient or save money, it is simply one component that can sometimes take the back burner.

Here are a few ways to make your facility more energy efficient with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Software).

Tracking a Schedule

One way of saving energy is having certain equipment off when it is not being used. For instance, if your maintenance facility is not open 24/7, it is not necessary in most cases for the HVAC unit to be running. However, does anyone make it a point to turn it off when the day is done? If this is the case and you do have a facility where the unit can be turned off, use your CMMS to schedule it. When you do this, someone actually gets the notification to do this and you don't have to worry.

Find a Balance

This same HVAC unit may be more comfortable running 24/7 so it is important to find that balance. If you do not want it turned off because it takes too long to cool (or heat) the building when it is open, you are able to adjust what you need. Instead of having someone turn it off, have that same employee turn it to an energy saving temperature. The point is to find a balance that works for everyone's comfort while still saving energy and money.

Don't Forget Preventative Maintenance

Planned maintenance or preventative maintenance helps create energy efficiency by decreasing equipment downtime, plus the cost and time it takes to make unscheduled repairs. The time you spend scheduling preventative maintenance is far less than taking someone away from another task to deal with a new problem. Not only will your employees be happier, but you will have more time in your schedule to focus on other issues, saving you quite a bit of money in the long term.
