Preventative

Even highly trained employees have certain procedures they must follow. Not only because it's part of doing a good job, but there are safety risks to think of and regulations that, when not implemented, can cause serious problems, even death.

you-are-fired

If you are lucky, getting fired is the worst thing that will happen to you for not following procedures.

A Minor Issue

Let's say that you have something as simple as an air hose to a compressor. Now perhaps that hose needs lubrication in order to have a longer life and not become cracked. This is a simple procedure that may get pushed to the back burner or not done at all. Eventually, this hose cracks and is useless.  While this is very minor, its still bad practice.  If bad practice becomes common practice in your facility, you are asking for trouble.

The Consequence

Let's look at what happened at the Bumble Bee Foods plant in Los Angeles. A worker actually died in a horrific way due to two co-workers not following procedures.

“The company, its plant Operations Director, Angel Rodriguez, and former safety manager Saul Florez were each charged with three counts of violating Occupational Safety & Health Administration rules that caused a death. The charges specify that the company and the two men willfully violated rules that require implementing a safety plan, rules for workers entering confined spaces, and a procedure to keep machinery or equipment turned off if someone's working on it.”

Not only was the company fined, the workers face criminal charges that could lead to jail time – and all for not following the proper procedures.  It doesn't have to be the loss of a life to make it horrifying, loss of limbs, vision etc can be just as devistating.

Possible Downtime

Of course, preventing physical harm is the number one reason to follow procedures, there are other consequences to consider as well.  When machinery isn't properly maintained and breaks down, that can cost the company alot of money in downtime and repairs.  I'm sure they would be looking to go after whomever was responsible.  Cover your basis, work smart and safe with the help of CMMS.

The Solution

With a Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) program from Maintenance Care, you can easily make sure that all of the procedures in your facility are being followed correctly.  If they are not, you'll know who did the work, when it was done, and then make any necessary adjustments to your team.
