How Dirty Are Shoes?

The easiest way to keep your floors clean is to have people take off their shoes and while that may be acceptable in your own home, it's not going to work for customers or guests. The problem is that there are so many germs brought in by shoes.

“In a recent study, researchers at the University of Arizona found nine different species of bacteria on people's shoes. These types of bacteria can cause infections in our stomachs, eyes and lungs. The study also found bacteria live longer on our shoes than in other places. As we walk, we constantly pick up new debris that feeds the growth of more bacteria. The researchers tested to see if bacteria on shoes would transfer to the tile floors in a house. More than 90 percent of the time it did. Carpeting harbors bacteria even more.”

One pair of shoes in the study has an astounding 66 million organisms and this was just through daily, normal walking. This found as a part of a program on GMA called, “How Dirty Are Your Shoes?”

Combating Dirt and Germs

So how do you keep all of those germs out of a sterile environment? One way is to remain vigilant with cleaning but know when to call in professionals or at least have professional equipment. A simple mopping, vacuuming, or sweeping of a floor only gets a very small portion of the germs since their make-up doesn't reach as far as a professional's equipment. Your vacuum is never going to suck up the dirt and germs like a professional carpet cleaning – especially something like a steam cleaning.

You have to either have the right equipment or hire someone who does – it's simply that easy. With Maintenance Work Order Software, you can schedule your employees to do the tasks needed to keep the floors as clean as possible even if you still hire a professional cleaner.
