All across North America, most places are experiencing extreme heat. Even some of the coldest areas are still having weather that is hotter than usual, which can cause a lot of problems in homes and businesses, especially when it comes to air conditioning systems.

There are a few ways to help keep the business at your maintenance department cool and comfortable so you don't have to spend extra time fixing the HVAC system or having to hire someone to come out.

Homeowner Tips on Keeping Cool

By just keeping in mind a few preventative tasks, hopefully your air conditioning will last for many years, or at the very least – throughout an extremely hot summer.

  • Set your thermostat at as high a temperature as comfortably possible in the summer, and ensure humidity control if needed. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
  • Avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.
  • Consider using an interior fan along with your window air conditioner to spread the cooled air through your home without greatly increasing your power use.
  • Avoid placing appliances that give off heat such as lamps or TVs near a thermostat

Business Tips on Keeping Cool

While these tips are for homeowners, the same rules are applicable to businesses. There are also a few things you can do as a maintenance department manager that will help your business stay cool:

  • Keep up with preventative maintenance. Make sure your air filters are changed as often as needed and you can keep up with this easily through your Facilities Management Software.
  • Have maintenance personnel check for leaks, hose issues, and any questionable problem with the AC unit before you call out a professional.
  • Spot checks are important too – if anything looks questionable, have it checked out.

Even if you're not in an area with extreme heat, it is still important to take good care of the HVAC unit at your business or for the building you take care of.
