When it comes to safety, all details are important. From the smallest of details that might be overlooked to the larger details that are more apparent - everything matters. Another thing that is critical to being safe in the work environment is communication between everyone involved.

According to the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board), “In my experience as a mechanic who worked on both airline and general aviation aircraft and as an NTSB member reviewing accidents, communication between those who maintain aircraft and those who fly aircraft is not as good as it could and should be. In these alerts, the NTSB highlights one particular area where the failure to communicate clearly can have tragic results for the GA pilot.”

Communication

Now you might not have anything to do with aircraft but no matter what kind of maintenance facility you run, communication and attention to details is important to not only run a well oiled machine, so to speak, but to also have an environment that is safe for everyone from workers to visitors.

Safety

Let's say that you have a small facility where you take care of lawns. Heavy equipment and chemicals are usually used so communicating with your employees about safety precautions is just as important as telling an aircraft pilot something that means the plane is safer. The same thing is true in a healthcare facility – people's lives depend on being safe and much of that comes from the maintenance facility.

Details

One way to ensure that communication can always be referred to is with a CMMS Program. This allows you to have a record of all of your work orders, preventative maintenance, and you can even upload MSDS (material safety data sheets), as well as warranties, repair information, and more. The simple fact is, by having this information that you can easily access, you know that the employee received it and you even know when the job was completed or when a job is coming up.

Communication and attention to details are two of the easier things to do to make work safer but both are often overlooked. Don't let that happen when it is easy to keep up with and could potentially save someone's life.
